Queen of the North - update 11
Friday, November 17th, 2006 - 2:02 pm
Adding to suspicions of a cover-up, BC Ferries has admitted that the logbooks for the Queen of the North, which sank in March 2006, have disappeared, despite having been removed from the ship by the Captain before the sinking. When the ship crashed into Gil Island, 14 minutes after its course should have been altered, only Fourth Officer Carl Lilgert and deckhand Karen Bricker were on the bridge. They claimed they didn’t know how to dim the brightness on the GPS display to see better out the window, so they turned it off. The Transportation Safety Board, which continues to investigate the accident, also concluded that they lacked sufficient training in the steering system or the navigational gear. The two crew members have refused to talk about events leading up to the crash.
BC Ferries CEO David Hahn dismissed the suggestion they lacked training, implying a cover-up by crew. However, he also characterized the disappearance of the logbooks as an innocent mistake.
