37 percent of BC farm vans fail safety inspection

Out of 180 farmworker vans inspected in the Fraser Valley during eight days in March 2007, 67 (37%) had to be pulled out of service for various safety flaws. The number of failures is surprising so soon after the widely reported fatal crash of a farmworker van on March 7, 2007. CBC Vancouver’s story contains a link to detailed results of the inspection campaign, which the BC Ministry of Transportation says is ongoing. The province continues to resist calls for new legislation or regulation of farm labour contractors who operate the vans.
