DHL Worldwide Express expects to open a new, $125 million distribution centre (DC) at Shanghai’s Pudong Airport in the second half of 2010. DHL, controlled by the German Post Office (Deutsche Post), is following competitors FedEx and UPS which have already announced DCs in Guangzhou and Shanghai respectively.
DHL’s “North Asia hub” will be a 55,000 sq.ft. facility with capacity at peak periods of up to 20,000 parcels and a further 20,000 documents per hour. DHL already has a hub in Hong Kong and four other warehouses in Bangkok, Incheon, Singapore and Sydney as part of its “multi-hub” strategy for Asia. DHL projects that North Asian express shipments will rise from about 18% of world volumes today to 30% by 2012.
DHL maintains a relationship with Canada’s Purolator Courier, handling the bulk of Purolator’s international shipments. (Source: DHL press release)
